After living downtown for over 5 years, this is the first time we’ve had a pretty snow. We’ve seen ice and a few flakes that melted pretty quickly but this is the first time it has been beautiful.
It made getting around a little more difficult but it was worth it. I left work on Tuesday trying to figure out how to get home since KAT was running snow routes only. It wasn’t much further to walk to catch the bus, just very cold! I made it back downtown without too much trouble. These pictures were taken on my way home in Krutch Park.
Once I arrived home, the views from the apartment windows were spectacular.
Here are a couple of pictures I took. The first is Krutch Park with the Holston in the background and the second is Market Square. There were a few people out but it seemed pretty quiet. I did see several people walking their dogs and the dogs seemed to be having a great time. Our dog (a poodle that walks around puddles of water) kept ringing her bell and going to the door insistent on going out. I finally gave in and took her out assuming she would want to come right back in. She loved it and I had to drag her back in. What is it with dogs and snow?
At this point, I figurerd We were in for the evening since everything downtown usually closes early when the weather turns snowy. I was incorrect. We have a standing date with our friends Jim and Maureen. We go to Cru almost every Tuesday night. They have $5 pizza and $2 drafts. We called ahead and Cru was indeed going to be open. We bundled up and headed down an almost deserted Market Square to the 100 block of Gay Street.
It was warm and toasty and we had a nice cozy booth in the bar ready for us. I quickly scanned the taps and was excited to see a new beer, at least new to me, on draft. Snow and a new beer? Pretty much a perfect day. The beer was Highland Brewing Company Devil’s Britches. It is an American IPA with a sweet nose, a hint of fruit and malt with a nice bitter finish. I ordered my usual pepperoni pizza (everyone at the table did) with olives on the side for my dinner mates as I don’t like olives. The pizza was delicious with the perfect amount of pesto swirled into the tomato sauce. It was a perfect evening with the snow swirling around outside and good food, good beer and good friends inside. The walk home was magical. The snowflakes were fluffy and the city lights made them sparkly. I would have enjoyed walking around for a little longer but my love of warmth won out so we went home and watched it from the comfort of home.
